Shad in Minneapolis this Sunday [1-16-11]! First an All Ages & FREE In-store Performance and signing at Fifth Element and then rocking at the 7th Street Entry! Both with Freddie Gibbs!!
I admit, I was guilty of sleeping. The Shad CD sat on my desk for a couple months, amiss the couple dozen or so CDs I get each week. There was something about it that made it distinct that I can't quite place. Perhaps it's the cover, which sits somewhere between busy and minimalist, providing some intrigue. Yet I still hadn't given it a listen.
Towards the end of 2010 the name Shad started popping up in a lot of different conversations about "current favorite MCs", "top albums of 2010", and so on. I finally decided it's time to give this album a listen and I was pleasantly surprised.
The production is really musical, but with some definite grittiness. Shad is a great writer, able to effectively capture a variety of moods and topics. He's heavy on the usage of wit, metaphor, similes and so on, but doesn't get lost in it, as he balances with plenty of meaningful content. Clearly that's a fact not lost on him as the album comes with the albums full lyrics, which is always appreciated.
Overall, TSOL is an impressive album. Shad proves himself to be extremely capable of making music that is lyrically sharp enough to satisfy the Hip Hop purists, yet musically sound enough to intrigue the casual radio listener. All in all, hinting to a successful future for Shad.
He'll be hitting the Twin Cities this Sunday alongside Freddie Gibbs!
