Back in 2004 I received an email from Benjamin Frazen saying he, in collaboration with Kembrew Mcleod, was working on a documentary called Copyright Criminals, "about intellectual property and how copyright law has negatively affected the music industry in hip-hop, sound collage and other sample-based music."
I was immediately intrigued by the concept, but had no idea of what the final product would be. A few years later the project was completed and the final result was rather impressive. If you haven't seen this documentary yet, I highly suggest that you do. You will learn a great deal about the history of sampling as well as the laws surrounding it. There are endless quotables and interesting information from the samplers as well as the sampled; De La Soul, George Clinton, Q Bert, Harry Allen, Chuck D, Hank Shocklee, EL P, Sage Francis, Mixmaster Mike, DangerMouse, Clyde Stubblefield, Eyedea & Abilities, and more!!
COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS will be airing on PBS starting this week! Find local airtimes: http://to.pbs.org/copcrim
